Chapter 12
âI saw Jeremy today,â Lewis said, as he lay down on the soft forest loam.
Becca slid off his shoulder and landed hard on the earth below. She staggered for a moment before sitting down on a nearby boulder. Lewis snaked his head around it and practically rested it in her lap. The more time she spent around him, the more she was coming to realize that dragons were basically big lap animals. They loved being petted. She smiled as she ran her fingers down the bridge of his snout and watched as he closed his eyes with a purr.
âHow is he doing? He hasnât spoken to me in a while,â Becca said.
âWe had a fight.â
âAs in an argument?â
âNope, as in a physical fight. He attacked me. A lot,â Lewis grumbled. âRemember Lambtonâs knife? Jeremyâs got it now. It still doesnât work, but it hurt when he â YEOW!â Lewis cried out in pain as Becca ran her fingers over the cut on his snout. âWhen he cut me.â
âOh, you poor baby,â Becca murmured, pulling her hand away from the cut. It wasnât very deep, and so far as she could tell, it wasnât even bleeding anymore. There was no scab, only some cut scales. âIt really hurts that much?â
âYeah,â Lewis grumbled. âHe cut down to the root of some scales. Hurts to touch.â
Becca shook her head and carefully began to pick away scale fragments from the cut. As she tugged loose shards off his snout, oily red dragon blood leaked out. He quickly lapped it up with his thick, forked tongue, shivering at the touch but staunching the bleeding.
âDid you kill him?â Becca asked, all at once afraid of the answer.
âNo, I didnât even really fight back. I added him to my hoard, though, and tried to prove I was safe for him to be around.â
âI bet he didnât take kindly to being hoarded,â Becca chuckled, scratching Lewis behind the ear. She remembered how the others had reacted when she told them that Lewis would have to lick them and sniff them for a solid minute before theyâd officially be a part of his hoard. Neither Brandon nor Lucy had liked the idea, while Martha and Grace had flat out refused to let him get that close to them. She supposed if she brought it up, Crystal might find it amenable. Still, she wasnât entirely sure if Lewis was interested in hoarding the scientists studying him.
âNo, he didnât,â Lewis grumbled, leaning into her touch. âOooh yeah, right there, thatâs the spot,â he purred. The ground shook as he thumped a foot happily.
Becca waited for the thumping to stop before she started up again. âSo, if you managed to add Jeremy to your hoard, does that mean he wants to be friends with you again?â Becca asked.
Lewis paused and looked away. âIâm not entirely sure, to be honest,â he admitted. âI want to believe that we can move past all of this,â he continued, gesturing to himself with a nod of his head, âbut Jeremy⦠I dunno.
